Polish magazine \u201ePuls Medycyny\u201d has published, for the 13th time already, the List of 100\u00a0most influential people in Polish medicine and for the second time the List of 100\u00a0most influential people in Polish healthcare. Prof.\u00a0Henryk Skar\u017cy\u0144ski, director of the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing, was the first on the list of the most influential people in Polish medicine this year, and Dr. Konstanty Radziwi\u0142\u0142, Minister of Health, was chosen by\u00a0experts as the most influential person in Polish healthcare. Gala Ceremony took place in Bristol Hotel on 18th<\/sup> January 2016, it was hosted by\u00a0Patrycja Woy-Wojciechowska and Krzysztof Jakubiak, chief editor of \u201ePuls Medycyny\u201d.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

List of 100\u00a0published by\u00a0\u201ePulsu Medycyny\u201d it is a\u00a0ranking of the most important names in Polish medicine. Jury, comprised of the representatives of the world of science, politics, healthcare managers and representatives of associations of producers of pharmaceuticals and medical products, evaluated the achievements of candidates in spheres of treatment, introducing novel technologies and therapies into medical practice, being at the cutting edge of progress in Polish medicine, as well as their influence on legal regulations, organization and functioning of Polish healthcare system.<\/p>\n

The Jury of \u201ePuls Medycyny\u201d has rewarded Prof.\u00a0Skar\u017cy\u0144ski for his immense impact on development of Polish otolaryngology, audiology, phoniatrics, rehabilitation and biomedical engineering, as an author of several ground-breaking methods of treatment of hearing disorders in adults and in children. Prof.\u00a0Skar\u017cy\u0144ski had held the second position on the list last year, thanks to\u00a0his teaching and organizational achievements, and had been listed high in this ranking also in the previous years.<\/p>\n

Laudation for Prof.\u00a0Skar\u017cy\u0144ski presented Prof.\u00a0Alicja Chybicka, MP, eminent haematologist, clinical immunologist, oncologist, specialist in palliative care and paediatrics.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Laureate\u2019s biography is incredibly rich, it could fill several medical CVs. In 1992, he was the first surgeon in Poland and in Central and Easter Europe to\u00a0perform cochlear implant surgery, thus putting in motion the hearing implant program in Poland. He is an author and co-author of more than 2,5\u00a0thousand Polish and international research papers, including more than a\u00a0thousand in IP journals. He was a\u00a0promoter of 19\u00a0doctoral theses and 4\u00a0habilitation theses. He is a\u00a0member of scientific societies of global scope in medical fields related to\u00a0ENT, audiology, phoniatrics, rehabilitation and clinical engineering. (\u2026) In 1998, he performed the first in Poland brainstem implantation and in 2003, middle ear implantation. In 2002\u00a0he initiated first in the world program of partial deafness treatment in adults and in 2004\u00a0in children. This method is worldwide known as the Polish specialty, the \u2018Skar\u017cy\u0144ski method\u2019. Moreover, he developed a\u00a0novel electrode to\u00a0be used with this approach, and clinical procedure which has been implemented in several CI centres worldwide. He is an author of the unique telemedical programs: \u201cI Can Hear\u2026\u201d, \u201cI Can See\u2026\u201d, \u201cI Can Speak\u2026\u201d. In 2010\u00a0he presented to\u00a0the world the first National Network of Teleaudiology. He is an author of the first in the world concept of the Partial Deafness Treatment PDT. His method of surgical approach to\u00a0the inner ear through the round window has been proven to\u00a0be an exceptionally effective procedure for partial deafness treatment. <\/em><\/p>\n

In 2011\u00a0he initiated and coordinated a\u00a0program \u2018Equal opportunities for children with communication disorders in European countries\u2019 \u2013 the priority of Polish presidency of the EU. He was a\u00a0chief mover of the European scientific consensus statements on these topics, signed by\u00a0the leaders of European societies of audiologists, phoniatricians, speech therapists and ophthalmologists. These activities resulted in the adoption of the \u2018EU Council Conclusions on Early Detection and Treatment of Communication Disorders in Children, Including the Use of e-Health Tools and Innovative Solutions\u2019 in 2011. <\/em><\/p>\n

His major scientific, clinical and educational achievement was development and implementation of the idea of the World Hearing Center in May 2012.<\/em><\/p>\n

He received many state awards from the Prime Minister, Minister of Health, Minister of Science and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, from medical associations and many prestigious Polish and international decorations. His innovation activities had been awarded on the international innovation exhibitions in Brussels, Paris, Geneva, Washington, Nuremberg, Seoul, Kuala Lumpur, Taiwan, Sevastopol, Moscow and Casablanca. He is an author or co-author of 14\u00a0patented solutions. The President of Poland awarded him the <\/em>Polonia Restituta Knight\u2019s, Officer\u2019s and Commander\u2019s Crosses and state decorations from the King of Belgium, the President of Georgia and the President of Ukraine.<\/em> He received the Papal Order<\/em> Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice for his work for human and common good, and from the Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz \u2013 a\u00a0medal \u2018of Merits for Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Warsaw\u2019. He is the first Pole in the history to\u00a0be accepted as member of the American Otological Society and the American Neurotology Society. <\/em><\/p>\n

Out of over 400\u00a0different awards and decorations which Prof.\u00a0Skar\u017cy\u0144ski received, some are particularly dear also for me \u2013 concluded Prof.\u00a0Alicja Chybicka \u2013 First is the Silver Asclepius awarded in students\u2019 competition <\/em>Primi Inter Pares, then award from the Polish Business Club for the Event of the Year in Medicine (1992), Medal <\/em>Gloria Medicinae \u2013 for the outstanding contributions in the field of medicine awarded by\u00a0the Polish Medical Society, the Honorary Pearl, the \u2019Golden Scalpel\u2019, \u2018Golden Otis\u2019, Super Icebreaker, the order ECCE HOMO for sacrifice for other people, profound medical expertise in relation to\u00a0hearing and speech, dedication to\u00a0bringing happiness to\u00a0people through restoring hearing and returning people to\u00a0the world of sounds. And last decoration, especially dear to\u00a0any doctor, is the Order of Smile awarded by\u00a0children. (\u2026) I\u00a0cordially congratulate Professor Skar\u017cy\u0144ski!<\/em><\/p>\n

Prof.\u00a0Henryk Skar\u017cy\u0144ski was moved: \u2013 I\u00a0am very happy that \u2018Puls Medycyny\u2019 had included me in their List of 100\u00a0for many years, with such an eminent group of experts. This distinction, this year, is particularly important for me and my team. This year we\u00a0are celebrating two anniversaries: 25\u00a0years of the first in Poland program of treatment of deafness and 20\u00a0years since establishing of the Institute of Physiology and pathology of Hearing. This is a\u00a0special year for us and this honour pleases us immensely. Being named the most influential person in Polish medicine in 2015\u00a0I\u00a0would like to\u00a0underline that for me the most important is to\u00a0be able to\u00a0help the other people as a\u00a0physician. I\u00a0am happy to\u00a0observe that in my specialty Polish patients can benefit from the newest technologies. I\u00a0treat each patient to\u00a0the best of my abilities, in such way as I\u00a0could wish for myself to\u00a0be approached, if I\u00a0needed help. <\/em><\/p>\n

The most influential person in Polish healthcare in 2015\u00a0was dr. Konstanty Radziwi\u0142\u0142, Minister of Health. His laudation presented Prof.\u00a0Marian Zembala, eminent cardiac surgeon, transplantologist, director of the Lower Silesia Center for Cardiac Disease Treatment (Dolno\u015bl\u0105skie Centrum Chor\u00f3b Serca) in Zabrze.<\/p>\n

\u2013 Minister Radziwi\u0142\u0142 and his new team are surely a\u00a0wise <\/em>continuum. He has shouldered a\u00a0difficult and responsible task of leading a\u00a0Ministry, which there are 38\u00a0millions of Poles who know better how to\u00a0do\u00a0it. You are a\u00a0right person in the right place, not only in the Ministry, but also in this ranking. (\u2026) I\u00a0believe that the Ministry of Health will stay above the divisions, because the most beautiful mission for a\u00a0politician in medicine is to\u00a0serve people, and this motto is common for all. (\u2026) I\u00a0wish you, Minister, and your team many successes to\u00a0mirror the strength of science, medicine and pharmacology and win the respect of medical practitioners and hospital managers. I\u00a0congratulate you and wish you success!<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2013 I\u00a0know the List of 100\u00a0very well and, like probably every healthcare employee, follow it very closely every year \u2013 <\/em>said Minister Konstanty Radziwi\u0142\u0142 during the ceremony \u2013 I\u00a0think that the most important person in healthcare should every year be the Minister of Health. <\/em>If he is not \u2013 it is a\u00a0signal that something is wrong. <\/em>(\u2026) The List of 100\u00a0of a\u00a0kind of expert peer review, and I\u00a0will treat this distinction as an expression of trust and positive evaluation of reforms we\u00a0are planning to\u00a0introduce in our Department \u2013 <\/em>added Minister Radziwi\u0142\u0142.<\/p>\n

Among the laureates of previous editions are included: Jolanta Kwa\u015bniewska, dr. Marek Balicki, Prof.\u00a0Zbigniew Religa, Ewa Kopacz, Prof.\u00a0Marian Zembala, Prof.\u00a0Jacek Jassem.<\/p>\n
